Acupuncture preparation for an IVF cycle
Whether you are going through IVF for the first time or have gone through many previous attempts, the research is clear on the benefits of acupuncture in the lead up to and during an IVF/ICSI/IMSI cycle.
When should I start?
Ideally, acupuncture treatment should begin at least 3 months in advance of the planned IVF cycle. This is because the sperm and egg follicles take approximately that amount of time to mature, so by increasing circulation to the ovaries/endometrial lining/testes you are increasing the availability of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to these areas for optimal development.
How many treatments will I need?
During the IVF cycle itself, acupuncture treatment is recommended at specific stages of the process.
E.g. One treatment during down-regulation (if applicable), two treatments during the stimulation phase and then pre & post transfer treatments. Women often choose to attend during the two week wait to manage anxiety symptoms and to support the implantation process, which occurs within approximately 7-10 days of embryo transfer.
The pre & post transfer treatments are considered very important. While the pre transfer treatment may take place within 24 hours of the scheduled transfer time, the post transfer treatment should preferably happen within a few hours of the transfer.
Flexibility with appointment scheduling is guaranteed, ensuring that even if your transfer is taking place on the weekend you will be able to have your treatments at the appropriate time. Allowances are also made in case there is any uncertainty regarding whether you will be having a day 3 or day 5 transfer, so that there will be a treatment slot available for you when you need it.
How may Acupuncture improve my chances of success with IVF?
Some of the fertility issues affecting IVF success rates that acupuncture treatment may assist with include;
- Poor quality or thickness of the endometrial lining.
- Tendency to under or over-stimulate during past IVF cycles.
- Improved blood circulation to the ovaries, in the lead up to egg retrieval.
- Prevents the uterus from cramping during the crucial post-transfer period.
- Modulates the endocrine system to assist with hormonal balance.
- Reduces anxiety symptoms during the two week wait.
- Reduces the risk of an early miscarriage.
